The soil was wonderfully rich for two years, but with 200 inches of rain per year it soon washed away, leaving only clay. We should probably built terraces, to hold the soil in place, but there was nobody there to advise us.Puzzledhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10643414165184822815noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1744496194970768734.post-53654275821350980792020-11-23T17:26:21.388-08:002020-11-23T17:26:21.388-08:00As I remember, the next fall after the harvest, th...As I remember, the next fall after the harvest, the Pilgrims invited their native friends to a Thanksgiving celebration. A lot of native people came, and almost 1/2 the food supply for the coming winter was devoured in that celebration. The Pilgrims, when their food stock dwindled to almost nothing, made a covenant together that each of them would live on only 5 kernels of corn per day. They did this for several weeks. None of them died! (as opposed to the first winter when 50% of them died). To remember this "starving time", their descendants would always put a little plate with five kernels of corn beside each place setting and retell the story of how their ancestors stuck together and survived. Our family keeps that tradition even today. When it has been the custom of many to pig out and then lie around watching thanksgiving football games. How times have changed!
